Gravelord – Movement

Today, we’re going to look at the movement in our new, yet unannounced game. (The announcement is happening soon!)

Fast and snappy movement is the staple of the boomer shooter genre, and our game is no exception!

Despite playing as a 400-pound hulking gravedigger, you move with the agility of a gorilla and the speed of a leopard.

But being fast won’t cut it alone. Here come the other tools that greatly improve your mobility.

Your heirloom, the Total Uber Shovel, can turn spectral and fly to special surfaces, after which you can pull yourself to it in an instant. This allows you to travel great distances, confuse enemies, and get to otherwise inaccessible places.

Another tool in your arsenal are the Spring Boots. They enable a double jump — you can jump a second time while in the air. Some levels provide multiple Boots, allowing for a maximum of a quadruple jump. And this, combined with a great deal of control while in the air, gives you immense agility to toy with your foes and get to any place in a flash!

While the vast majority of the time you’ll be fighting the hordes of evil on the surface, there’s yet another gadget for underwater gameplay that makes life much easier. The Rebreather not only gives you the comfort of breathable air while in the deep, it also greatly increases your swimming speed, so you can get around much faster.

What’s great is that the game allows you to combo these mobility tools however you like for very satisfying & creative moves!

And here’s how the basic movement was coming together during prototyping.

Although we use the Unity engine which provides a ready-made solution for a typical FPS character mover, we decided to roll our own solution from scratch. This gives us total creative & technical control over every aspect of the movement, without having to fight the Unity’s often buggy behavior.

Our game also supports nested movers (elevators, platforms, rotators, etc.), vertical & horizontal ladders, jumpers, pushers, underwater currents, teleports, and other movement-related things that allow for very creative spatial & jumping puzzles.

Thank you!
